Rabat, Agencia IP.- U.S. President Donald J. Trump reaffirmed the United States’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and expressed his country’s support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the basis for resolving the conflict, according to a statement issued by the Royal Cabinet of Morocco.
The declaration was conveyed in a message sent to King Mohammed VI on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of Throne Day.
In the message, Trump congratulated the monarch and the Moroccan people while highlighting the historic relationship between the two countries. «This year, we celebrate 250 years of American history and enduring friendship with Morocco – a bond forged in trust and mutual respect,» he said.
Support for the autonomy proposal
Regarding Western Sahara, the U.S. president reaffirmed his country’s position. «The United States has been clear: we recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, and we support Morocco’s serious, credible, and realistic autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution,» he said.
He also stated that «any other path prolongs the status quo and is unacceptable,» adding that «this dispute must end now, and the United States will continue to drive progress toward that end.»
Security and development cooperation
In his message, Trump highlighted Morocco’s role in regional stability and international cooperation.
«Your Majesty’s wise leadership has been a cornerstone of stability. Morocco’s steadfast focus on advancing peace, combating extremism, and protecting American and Moroccan security, including through its vital role in the Abraham Accords, reflects a valuable partnership for the United States. To this end, we will also work together to secure the Sahel region,» he said.
Economic relations
The U.S. president also referred to economic cooperation between the two countries and investment prospects.
«Your vision for growth opens doors to good fortune for both our people and economies,» he said.
In this context, he noted that he had instructed his teams to work to promote Morocco’s economic and social development, «including in the Western Sahara territory.»
He also stated that American technology and innovation would continue to serve as partners to Morocco «across strategic sectors from energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense.»
The message concluded with the statement: «Together, we are building a new era. It is one that puts the interests of both our peoples first.»
