Secretary of State highlights historic growth in Paraguay-U.S. relations

Asunción, Agencia IP.- United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted the historic growth of relations with Paraguay over the past year and a half and expressed the U.S. government’s willingness to ensure that these ties remain strong regardless of changes in political administrations.

During the signing ceremony of a strategic cooperation agreement on civil nuclear matters, the U.S. Secretary of State stated that relations between the United States and Paraguay have grown in an unprecedented way over the last 18 months.

He noted that if both countries are able to continue building on what has been achieved during this period, not only in bilateral matters but also on regional issues where Paraguay has demonstrated significant leadership, «the relationship between the United States and Paraguay will change forever from an already extraordinary one.»

Rubio also mentioned the willingness of President Donald Trump’s administration to establish the foundations for a lasting strategic partnership between the two countries.

«Regardless of changes in government, the foundation of the relationship between both countries should be able to withstand any political changes that may occur in the future,» the Secretary of State said.

The bilateral relationship between both countries is focused on cooperation in regional security, while also encompassing strengthened trade and bilateral investment.

«We share values and principles such as freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, which allow us to work very closely together,» said Paraguayan Foreign Minister Rubén Ramírez Lezcano.

Vice President Pedro Alliana, who met with Secretary Rubio, also highlighted that the strong relationship between Paraguay and the United States promotes innovation, technological development, and sustainable growth for the benefit of all Paraguayans.
